Wind Turbine Repowering: Give Your Wind Site a New Generation

Unlock more generation potential from an existing wind site with Pioneer Wincon’s proven repowering experience.

And this is not a new area for Pioneer Wincon. Pioneer Wincon has already completed the repowering of 30 wind turbine generators, representing 22.5 MW of repowered capacity.

Some of India’s best wind locations were developed decades ago. The wind resource is still there. The land is established. Grid connectivity and access infrastructure may already be in place. What has changed dramatically is the technology available to capture that wind.

That is where wind turbine repowering creates an opportunity.

By replacing an earlier-generation wind turbine with a newer, site-suitable turbine, owners can explore higher energy generation while continuing to derive value from an established wind location.

For suitable sites Pioneer Wincon’s repowering solutions can offer the potential to achieve Plant Load Factors (PLF) of up to 31%, subject to wind conditions, turbine configuration, grid availability and other site-specific factors.

Why Repowering an Existing Wind Site Makes Sense

An ageing turbine does not necessarily mean an ageing wind opportunity.

Many older wind turbines operating today were designed around the rotor sizes, hub heights, control systems and electrical technologies available when they were installed.

Wind turbine technology has moved forward considerably since then.

A modern turbine can use a larger swept area, improved aerodynamics, variable-speed operation, active pitch control and modern power electronics to extract energy more effectively from the available wind resource.

The benefit to the owner is straightforward: the same wind site may be capable of producing considerably more useful energy with the right turbine configuration.

Higher annual generation can also improve the utilisation of an asset that may already have land, electrical connectivity, evacuation infrastructure and years of operating history behind it.

This is what makes repowering different from developing an entirely new wind project.

Repowering Can Give an Established Asset a Fresh Business Case

The economics of every project will be different, but repowering can create several advantages for an existing wind asset.

The most visible benefit is higher generation potential. At suitable locations, Pioneer Wincon repowering projects can achieve PLF levels of up to 31%, depending on wind resource, grid availability and other site-specific conditions.
There can be other advantages too.

Existing access roads, electrical infrastructure, grid connectivity and familiarity with the location may reduce some of the uncertainties associated with identifying and developing a completely new wind site.

For industrial and captive power users, improved generation from an existing location can also contribute to a larger share of renewable electricity in their overall energy mix.

The opportunity, therefore, is not simply about replacing an old machine.

It is about asking:

Can this proven wind location deliver more value for the next phase of its life?

Repowering is Becoming Increasingly Relevant in India

India has a large operating base of wind turbines installed during the earlier phases of the country’s wind-energy development.

Recognising the opportunity to improve energy yield from existing wind project areas, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy issued the National Repowering & Life Extension Policy for Wind Power Projects – 2023.

The policy provides a national framework for replacing older-generation wind turbines with newer technology and improving the utilisation of established wind-energy sites.

For wind asset owners, this creates a timely opportunity to look at older wind sites not only from the perspective of remaining turbine life, but also from the perspective of future generation potential.

Why Pioneer Wincon for Wind Turbine Repowering?

  • Repowering requires more than supplying another wind turbine.
  • The replacement turbine has to work with the wind resource, available land, electrical system, evacuation arrangement, access conditions and commercial objectives of the existing asset.
  • This is where Pioneer Wincon brings practical experience.

30 WTGs Repowered. 22.5 MW of Experience.

  • Pioneer Wincon has completed the repowering of 30 wind turbine generators with an aggregate capacity of 22.5 MW.
  • That field experience is important because every repowering project brings its own set of site conditions and engineering considerations.

Wind Turbine OEM Capability

  • As a wind turbine OEM, Pioneer Wincon brings turbine technology and engineering capability directly into the repowering process.
  • Our P57/750 kW wind turbine combines a 57-metre rotor with variable-speed, active-pitch operation and full-converter technology, offering a site-suitable platform for a range of wind conditions.

Site-Specific Approach

  • A repowering decision should begin with the site, not with the turbine.
  • Wind conditions, historical generation, land availability, turbine location, electrical infrastructure, grid connectivity, access and project economics all need to be considered before arriving at the right configuration.
  • Pioneer Wincon works with asset owners to evaluate these factors and identify a technically and commercially appropriate way forward.

The Site Already Has a History.
Now Look at Its Future.

An existing wind site has something a greenfield project does not — operating history.
You already know the location. You have seen how the wind behaves. You have generation records and practical experience of operating at the site.
Repowering allows that history to become the starting point for the next investment decision.
With 30 WTGs and 22.5 MW already repowered, Pioneer Wincon brings proven experience, wind turbine technology, engineering and project execution capability to help owners explore what their existing wind sites could deliver next.
